One of the reasons behind obesity is the individual’s consumption of excessive carbohydrates which is significantly more than what his/her body uses throughout his/her day to day life. Excessive intake of saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, and calories lead to the increase of the body’s cholesterol level, which then leads to some of the diseases mentioned above.
Statistics behind Obesity
In the American population, 12 million children aged 2-9 have been found to be obese, and almost 31.7% of Americans within 2-19 years of age are either overweight or already obese. Almost 75 million American adults have been found to be obese.
Health Risks that Come with Obesity
Depending on a few factors, obesity has different effects on a person’s body. These factors include gender, age, body fat distribution, and daily level of physical exertion.
Obese people who have minimal physical exertion in their daily lives and have unhealthy diets are more prone to several health risks such as stroke, high cholesterol levels, coronary artery disease, stroke, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, diabetes, among others. Obese children aren’t safe from these health risks as well.
An individual’s waistline also determines which health conditions an obese person is likely to suffer from. If there is fat build-up around the stomach, giving the body an apple-like shape, the risks of developing coronary heart disease are higher, as well as high cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and type 2 diabetes, as compared to those with lean bodies or those with fat buildup around their hips instead.
By drastically changing their lifestyle and the way they eat, obese people can lose weight and effectively reduce their risk of developing and suffering such health risks.
Getting a Healthier Weight
For people classified as obese or overweight, weight loss is a must-do, as soon as possible. By scraping off even just a portion of one’s total weight for starters can elicit cardiovascular benefits and can propel he person towards losing more of his/her excess weight. The following are reasons for obese people to want to gain and maintain a healthier weight.
- Blood circulation is better and more efficient
- Fluid levels are more manageable
- A significant decrease in the risk of developing health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer
